WARNING: OVERUSE OF THE WORD “NICHE” Take the twisted bow for example. A slow, long range bow with damage that scales directly with the target’s magic level. Absolutely amazing against high magic monsters, YET limited enough in its design to allow for specific niches to be filled using other weapons. Target has low magic level? Boom, bowfa niche. Need a fast hitting weapon? Boom, blowpipe niche. Need specific enchanted bolts? Fuck it, have fun waiting for sapphire bolt procs on Muspah. The scythe is even easier to design around (arguably). It’s unbelievably powerful, but a tweak in the defense numbers or model size of monsters and its basically a whip. The shadow is so god damn strong in its design, almost to the point of monopolizing the combat style, yet the eye of ayak carves out a small but powerful niche thanks to an itty bitty little gear piece that completely skyrockets it up in viability. The point is, all of these weapons are strong, near game-breaking, but still have niches created by their weaknesses that can be covered by other, cheaper weapons. That should be the design philosophy of the new megarare. It shouldn’t slot neatly into existing combat metas. It should be powerful enough to revolutionize combat, but not universal, and certainly not “niche-filling”. That being said, I don’t envy Jagex. This is probably the most difficult drop table to design in the game’s history up to this point. submitted by /u/Severe_Paper_Cut
