A new study by Swiss Economics (paid by Autonomiesuisse, an association of Swiss entrepreneurs that is critical of Switzerland’s institutional ties to the EU and according to its own statements, positions itself in the political center) sees little gain in prosperity for the Swiss population if the next Swiss-EU agreement goes through and major risks to Swiss competitiveness and the country’s democratic institutions. Quite interesting to see the government and Economiesuisse, who are in the pro-camp. On the other side you have some quite vocal firms or business associations (or their management) being against the new agreement. The pro-side argues that the current bilateral agreements will be cancelled and we will have a major economic hit (Ecoplan und BAK have published studies on this), whereas the con-side argues with the current study that the calculations of the two previous studies are flawed and the economic benefits are inflated or not calculated correctly. They additionally highlight the risks of Switzerland becoming uncompetitive and the weakening of democratic institutions (keyword dynamic adoption of law).
