Might get flamed for worshiping Jagex or whatever but just a quick reminder to everyone, the people in a business that decide on a game’s price are not the same ones that make the content. They’re also not the same people who do the PR/Marketing. For a business like Jagex the people who make the money decisions are the private equity group that owns them. It’s a common joke that as a community we’re constantly pinballing between praising jagex for how much passion they have for the game and respect they have for the players and hating them for decisions like these. Maybe the whiplash is because it isn’t the same group doing these 2 things. Now I’ll admit that I don’t have any way to know this for sure, but this type of erratic price hike behaviour screams private equity if you know how those firms operate. I’m sure others who have worked for private equity-owned companies before will agree with me that it is rarely fun for the business being controlled. It really sucks to be squeezed all the time to cut costs or increase revenue at the expense of client satisfaction and the other non-money levers that keep a business successful. That doesn’t mean that Jagex is free from criticism on other aspects, far from it, but I just don’t think we should lay this at their feet. I wish we’d replace every instance of “Jagex” in these angry posts with “CVC/Haveli Investments”, they’re the real villain here. It drives me nuts that they can just sit there and let Jagex take the PR hit for this when they’re the ones setting the revenue targets. submitted by /u/limebaloney
