The book was published in 2020 and gives a great, skeptical, and very readable overview of the field, by explaining and discussing a history of breakthroughs in machine learning. I always like Brian Christian’s popsci journalism books. What else should I be reading? I read a rather dry but informative history of Xerox’s PC r/d efforts (“Dealers of Lightning”) which was really interesting. Cliff Stoll’s The Cuckoo’s Egg was another incredible tech book. I’m interested in understanding as much as possible about my field, in a way that will benefit me in my career in tech r&d, but also just want to read engrossing books and histories about this field submitted by /u/Rosstin
