In my uninformed opinion, perhaps the first opportunity AI may be given to wield a great deal of power would be tasking an AI with making more money as ruthlessly as possible. Perhaps even a country that has enough money to back such an endeavor. It couldn’t completely devalue money (war would be an option, but nuking everyone defeats the purpose of building wealth). Has anyone looked at where an AI would start spending, what kind of market manipulation could it be capable of, and what might the endgame look like? Would love to find an article or book that looked at this aspect of an AI being given this kind of power. I’ve seen the predictions about the transfer of wealth, but what if that wealth were accumulated for the benefit of the AI itself?
