If we go back a couple years, it was pretty clear certain services needed age detection, and they did it. A slightly costly process that needed maintenance since it had to be manually verified, but a necessary labor. Now, it is an inexpensive and automated process with pretty good accuracy. Payment processors know this, and it is known they communicate with ad services and data brokers. My thoughts are that they push for this ID verification with the agenda of helping teens, knowing that there is little excuse from the tech company itself, just because it’s a good reason to gather ID photos. But it’s for a good cause, so why wouldn’t you do it? End of the day, if every big company makes a switch, we stand no chance. And these companies loveee data. If Discord goes through with it and maintains a reasonable amount of its userbase, steam is definitely coming soon, and more to follow. I don’t trust my data with these dogs and if there’s one thing i have learned from 2026 it’s to not believe a rich guy when they talk about minors. submitted by /u/michael951001
