Specifically in Varlamore, but partially in sailing and there’s leftovers in Zeah too. One of the main draws to me when going around the old world is that everything is interactable and part of the game as if it were a true RPG. Every single NPC minus storekeepers and such is an NPC you can attack. Doesn’t matter if it’s a random civilian, a hunter bird, a rat, or the king’s guards. Every tree is a tree you can chop because that’s what trees are for. Basically everything has examine text even the random heraldry on the 2nd floor of the random castle. You get the idea. I did sailing and noticed that most of the newly introduced creatures are attackable (cool!), but drop nothing. Not even a token set of bones or similar. It feels… weird, I guess? It’s like Jagex is actively discouraging you from engaging with these creatures at all. Even rats drop bones in the old world. It feels like you’re not supposed to treat them like NPCs, but as decorative props for the island. That’s what made me click what bothers me so much about Varlamore. Half of Varlamore is just props, including the NPCs. Many trees that aren’t acting as zone barriers can’t be chopped despite there being no reason to stop players from chopping them. There are a larger than normal amount of objects you can’t examine despite there being a TON of new objects. There are some things that in the old world you can interact with for gameplay that you can’t in Varlamore, one being a water pump if I recall. The animals can’t be attacked at all, even the large ones like hippos. The main city has a ton of random no-name civilian NPCs you can’t attack despite the first thing most players doing upon entering the game being murdering a Lumbridge citizen in cold blood. FFS we can go full Anakin and slay not just the gnome men, but the gnome women and gnome children too! But a fox in Auburnvale is where my character draws the line? Really?! Am I the only person who feels like this stuff just takes away the immersion and part of the oldschool charm? We had this same issue back when Zeah came out over a decade ago and it’s been mostly fixed by the reworks. So why has Varlamore released with those same issues? Was nothing learned? If even half the animals and city NPCs could be attacked, if even half the non-essential trees could be cut, the place would feel so much more alive. It feels like a sterile videogame theme park world made to deliver you between Content A and Content B, not the immersive and interactive world that this game is known for. submitted by /u/trapsinplace
