Switzerland (or maybe just German-speaking countries?) has a weirdly strong Mate soda culture . What used to feel like a monopoly by Club-Mate (and later El Tony Mate) is now wide open and ALMOST EVERY SUPERMARKET chain has its own version now. Here’s my very subjective ranking:

  • Club Mate - The O.G - Intense, kinda smoky, makes you burp like crazy—and yeah, overpriced. Still: I like it. CHF 3–5 .-
  • El Tony - The standard . Just solid. Nothing weird, nothing wrong. The sugar-free is finally there and… decent? ~CHF 1.50
  • Lamate (Migros) - Basically an El Tony clone. Works, but forgettable. (Haven’t tried the sugar-free—curious.) Cheap. 1.20.-
  • Prix Garantie Mate (Coop) - Actually a unique taste, not just a copy. No sugar-free (I think?), which is a shame. Surprise cheap favorite! 1.-
  • Mate Classic (LIdl) I haven’t tried yet - WHO HAS? Their other Freeway beverages are usually mid…
  • Don Mate (Aldi) - Very basic. Sugar-free tastes pretty artificial, but hey—it’s like CHF 1. Cheap
  • Vivi Kola Mate -A calmer, softer take. Sugar-free feels less “fake” than most. 3.-
  • Charitea Mate - Genuinely different. No sugar, no sweeteners. Almost too clean—missing a bit of punch. But flavour-wise? Impressive but pricy. 4.-
  • SUPER Mate - it’s the best. not suuper sparkly, but the taste - the fact that it’s produced here, in Lausanne and even the experimental elderberry version is great. 3.50.- - BEST! Yes, I know some people swear by Puerto Mate but it’s still , not soda. More iced tea than soft drink, so I’m leaving it out. What are your favorites? Anything I’m missing? Which one is THE BEST in your opinion? :) submitted by /u/cluesol
