This is a suggestion of mine from last year that got nearly a thousand upvotes so I figured right before the summer updates would be the best time to talk about it again. No matter what happens, the dragonfire ward will be used to farm Vorkath. People will use the DFS to tank rune dragons (even though they’ll still combo you for a 40 most of the time anyway). But the wyvern shield? It’s been left behind in so many ways… and even worse, the small role this item has is sabotaged by other parts of its design. Dragons have come out with some of the biggest elemental weaknesses we’ve seen yet. Which is great for midgame players, but the fact that a cheap tome has 5x the magic damage bonus and even more accuracy means there’s very little chance this shield will actually be used for magic in the future. The 3 mil Elidinis Ward cements that by having more magic damage… and you know what? That’s ok! It’s not that big a deal that it’s not a DPS magic shield. At least, it should be ok, because it has a different utility. After 7 years since its release, its still the only item in the game that can block a wyvern’s freeze attack. But here’s where the problems start cropping up with the shield’s unique place in the game. It doesn’t do a good job at this for 3 reasons: It has negative ranged defense. Even the Elidinis Ward’s +9 range defense seems good in comparison. I don’t understand this part, because the melee version of this shield, the DFS, has pretty good magic defense! Negative 10 melee attack across the board. Wyverns have pretty hefty defenses even when dragon hunter items are involved, so having negative attack really hurts (especially when your accuracy is multiplied by the lance). Minus two strength bonus! This is basically the only item I know of outside of a holiday fun weapon that has negative strength. Fossil island wyverns have such a bad reputation that a lot of people are willing to spend 500 slayer points to never be assigned them again. But many people still enjoy skeletal wyvern tasks. Well other than the time spent essentially being dragon speared twice in a row, unable to move to pickup any loot or dish out any damage. I love fossil island, I love killing wyverns of all types, and I think this shield has one of the coolest designs both visually and thematically. I think its more than worthy of being given some extra utility at one or two slayer tasks. It makes thematic sense too, wyverns are tanky and even attack with range themselves so why not give it some range defense. They are well known for attacking with multiple styles so removing its negative melee attack isn’t a big stretch. And having positive two strength instead of negative two would cement its role as an anti-wyvern shield, and not just a blue shield that looks cool. submitted by /u/WaveDashSpeedKick
