I see two major complaints right now: burning through caps faster, and Claude Code just being dumb all of a sudden. I didn’t really get the beefing until Friday, when I found myself yelling at Claude Code in all caps with a lot of punctuation. It was something like “USE PLAYWRIGHT!!@@#!@” I took the weekend off and thought about all the chances Anthropic has announced since mid-March. Especially the expanded context window. So this morning I tried this:
Shut off million-token context, let’s live in the past export CLAUDE_CODE_DISABLE_1M_CONTEXT=1
And my work today has gone so much better. Including work on the same project, involving the same requirement for making smart, independent use of playwright to reproduce and debug UI issues. Not once today has Claude forgotten the fundamentals I explained to it two prompts ago. Obviously, this means I lose the “benefit” of a 1 million token context window. But I didn’t have that benefit before 2 weeks ago and I was very happy with Claude Code before then. Yes this is completely unscientific. I’m one guy, one data point. Maybe I hit a happier Claude server this morning. Maybe they fixed everything forever on Sunday. Maybe I had the dumb myself on Friday. Who knows. So: Has anybody else tried this workaround? How did it go? submitted by /u/boutell
