Hi all, I’m a C permit holder, single, living in Canton Zurich since 2017, income >CHF 120k. I’m a bit confused about a provisional 2025 Direkte Bundessteuer bill I recently received for around CHF 4,500. The reason this seems odd is that I already prepaid my 2025 taxes last year, and based on the 2025 tax return I recently submitted, the remaining difference should only be about CHF 500 in total. That is the amount I would expect to still owe. Because of this, I contacted the Kantonales Steueramt in Zurich and asked why I had received a bill for around CHF 4.5k when, according to my submitted tax declaration, the shortfall appears to be only about CHF 500… They replied by email and said everything was fine and that they would send me a new bill. Today (to my surprise= I received the new bill ß and it is even higher than the previous one (!), now around CHF 5,000. That makes the situation even more confusing. In previous years, I usually received a provisional federal tax bill around mid-year or in Q3, and it was always more or less in line with my filed tax return, either slightly in my favour or with a small remaining balance to pay. My salary has only increased marginally compared with the previous year, and I had no major capital gains or other additional income that would explain such a large amount. All my previous tax bills have also been fully settled I would be perfectly happy to pay the CHF 500 difference immediately. But paying CHF 5,000 now, only to wait for CHF 4,500 to be refunded at some unknown point in the future, is obviously not ideal… I am planning to call the Zurich tax office once I am back from my vacation, but I was wondering - Has anything changed recently from a tax perspective, or am I missing something obvious here? submitted by /u/YennMeyer
