I just realized something kind of wild about The Matrix. The Agents, especially Smith… are basically what we’d today call autonomous AI agents: self-directed, acting within a system, adapting, and eventually even self-replicating and taking over. But the movie came out in 1999… way before “AI agents” were even a mainstream concept or discussion. Based on the context of the film’s release and its themes, the term “Agents” was chosen to reflect government-style enforcers (G-men), not the technical AI meaning we use today. Still lines up almost perfectly. Smith going rogue, copying himself, spreading uncontrollably is basically the feat many big labs are claiming were are close to. submitted by /u/TheBanq
