This is almost certainly the major theme behind the reduction. Yes, there is a move to cut costs and stop dumping cash through subsidized subscriptions. Though this is intertwined with the whole business model of knowing that the models will someday be extremely efficient, smart & profitable. This WAS the plan all along. Knowing the models will be good enough at some point where people will not need so much inference. Let’s be honest, it’s an efficiency thing. They understand and have understood that the models have not always been as efficient. It was almost required to act out the business model that OpenAI and Anthropic have acted out in order to get to this point, and before other countries do. Just though some might need to hear this perspective. If the next generation is not good enough, and the usage limits are still difficult, then I would say that is good cause to freak the fuck out.
