So last Sunday was wild. Picture this, You’re watching the Super Bowl -> Commercial break -> Screen goes black -> Big white text. “Deception.” -> Cut to black again. “Betrayal.” -> Black screen. “Treachery.” Then the punchline. “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.” Anthropic just spent millions on prime Super Bowl slots to mock OpenAI for putting ads in ChatGPT. That’s it. That’s the whole ad. Just dunking on their competitor. then Sam Altman completely lost it. Posted this 421-word essay on X calling them “dishonest” and “authoritarian.” Started using terms like “Orwellian doublespeak.” You could feel him typing angry. Then OpenAI ran their own Super Bowl ad about builders or whatever. Tech billionaires beefing over chatbot ads during the Super Bowl. That alone is kind of hilarious. Except the same week all this is happening both companies had their safety people quit. With public warnings. Tuesday. Guy named Mrinank Sharma runs Anthropic’s safety team. Posts this letter. “The world is in peril.” Says he kept watching the company struggle to “let our values govern our actions.” Wednesday. OpenAI researcher quits via New York Times essay. Says she has “deep reservations” about the whole ads thing. Also Tuesday Wall Street Journal reports OpenAI fired their top safety exec. Woman named Ryan Beiermeister. She’d been raising concerns about this “adult mode” feature. Worried about kids getting access. OpenAI says they fired her for sexual discrimination. She says that’s false. So you’ve got these two companies publicly fighting about who has better values while the people actually working on safety are walking out the door saying something’s very wrong. The rivalry goes back years. Dario Amodei runs Anthropic now. Used to be VP of Research at OpenAI. 2020 he left. Took his sister and 14 senior researchers with him. Started Anthropic specifically because he disagreed with how Sam was running things. Thought they were moving too fast. Not careful enough. Last May Anthropic put up these billboards all over San Francisco. “The one without all the drama.” Everyone knew what that meant. OpenAI’s board tried to fire Sam in November 2023. Whole thing was a mess. Employees revolted. Sam came back. Anthropic’s out here with billboards like we told you so. Now it’s escalated to Super Bowl money. Monday they started this thing where they’re releasing competing products within hours of each other. OpenAI drops their coding agent Codex. Few hours later Anthropic drops an Opus update. Hour after that OpenAI updates Codex claiming it’s 25% faster now. Like kids on a playground trying to one-up each other. It’s not just business either. Got political. Greg Brockman OpenAI’s president donated $25 million to Trump. Backs this pro-AI super PAC. Anthropic’s going the other direction. Meeting with Elizabeth Warren. Backing groups pushing for AI regulation. Trump’s AI czar literally called Anthropic “left-wing” and accused them of “fear mongering” to push regulations. They’re on opposite sides of the whole AI policy fight. ChatGPT has way more users than Claude. But talk to developers and they’ll tell you Claude Code completely changed how they work. Lot of them switched. OpenAI saw that and rushed out Codex to compete. Anthropic positions itself as the responsible one. Safety-focused. “The one without drama.” OpenAI says they’re democratizing AI. Making it free for billions of people. Altman called Anthropic’s model “an expensive product for rich people.” Anthropic shot back saying they don’t need to “maximize engagement for a billion free users because we’re not in some death race.” Both companies racing to IPO fourth quarter this year. Both worth hundreds of billions. Both losing their safety people. Telegraph talked to Anthropic employees. They’re privately freaking out. One said “it kind of feels like I’m coming to work every day to put myself out of a job.” Another one “AI will end up doing everything and make me and many others irrelevant.” They’re building tools they’re scared of while publicly fighting about who’s more responsible. Former OpenAI guy from their “Superalignment” team quit. Said the company keeps “prioritizing shinier products over safety.” Another researcher Tom Cunningham quit after writing this internal message. Accused OpenAI of turning the research team into propaganda. Said they actively discourage publishing anything that makes AI look bad. Both companies shipping updates constantly. Moving so fast their own safety teams can’t keep up. So the safety people leave. Post warnings. Companies keep shipping anyway. You’ve got two visions of AI development playing out. Fast and free for everyone versus slower and more controlled. Political left versus right. Warren versus Trump. Both sides convinced they’re saving the world. Both convinced the other side is dangerous. And the whole time the people whose job is to think about safety are walking out saying the world’s in peril. Nobody’s really connecting those dots. Everyone’s focused on the Super Bowl ads and the product launches and who’s winning. Meanwhile the safety people are gone. TLDR: Anthropic ran Super Bowl ads mocking OpenAI for ChatGPT ads. Altman posted 421-word rant calling them authoritarian. Same week both safety leads quit with warnings. Dario left OpenAI 2020 over safety disagreements started Anthropic. Billboards last year “one without drama.” Now releasing competing products within hours. Brockman donated $25M to Trump. Anthropic backs Warren. Both racing Q4 IPO. Safety people quitting saying world in peril while companies spend millions fighting about values.
