I’ve noticed that some married men check in with their wives before making certain purchases, especially bigger ones. For those of you who are married, how does that work in your relationship? Do you have a spending limit where you discuss it first, or do you each buy what you want within reason? submitted by /u/ShineGreymonX

We have a 100% shared income and budget, and each of us has a “Fun Money” category within the budget. We can save and spend from that category with no discussion or judgment. If we spend anything over $500 from a “family” budget category (like Home Improvement), we generally discuss it first.

We work from a $0 budget, so every dollar is assigned a job (category) before it’s spent. We meet every couple of weeks to discuss the budget and make adjustments as needed. Has worked incredibly well for us for the last 10 years. I can’t remember the last time we argued over finances.
