We talk a lot on this sub about AGI replacing labor and the transition to a post-scarcity economy. But I’ve been running a thought experiment about a much more insidious, near-term (next 15-20 years) scenario. What happens when AI replaces all basic mental and physical labor, but still needs human ingenuity to push past its own evolutionary bottlenecks? In this scenario, the vast majority of humanity loses its “tool value” entirely. For the average person, their only remaining economic value to the system is biological: reproduction, in the hopes of spawning the 0.001% of anomalous “geniuses” required to keep pushing AI forward. Because we are looking at the 2040s—not the 25th century—there are no Matrix-style battery pods or forced breeding camps. Instead, it’s a velvet prison built on UBI, spatial computing, and algorithmic nudging. Here is what the lifecycle of an average human might look like in this system: Phase 1: Childhood and “The Anomaly Hunt” Traditional education collapses because there is no labor market to train for. Instead, every child is raised alongside personalized, hyper-advanced AI tutors. Continuous Psychometrics: These AIs aren’t teaching; they are screening. They are constantly testing for intuitive leaps, chaotic logic, and extreme lateral thinking—the rare human traits that AI still struggles to simulate. The Sieve: If a child hits the threshold for “genius,” they are plucked from the masses and fast-tracked into the elite technological oligarchy to help steer the AI. If they don’t, they are stamped as “baseline” and routed into the standard consumer/reproductive class. Phase 2: Adulthood and Gamified Reproduction If you are a “baseline” human, you have no job. To keep you docile and biologically productive, the system relies on dopamine and tiered Universal Basic Income (UBI). The UBI Paywall: Base-level UBI keeps you alive: synthetic food, a micro-apartment, and an endless stream of AI-generated VR content. But if you want real food, physical travel, or premium spatial computing rigs? You need “contribution credits.” Algorithmic Matchmaking: The primary way to earn these credits is through the only valuable thing you have left: your genetics. AI matchmaking apps will pair you with genetically complementary partners. If you agree to reproduce—diversifying the gene pool and giving the system another “roll of the dice” for a genius—your UBI tier is upgraded. You live a life of extreme, algorithmically curated leisure, completely unaware you are essentially livestock in a genetic gacha game. Phase 3: Old Age and The Paywalled LEV (Longevity Escape Velocity) Within 20 years, we will likely see massive leaps in life extension and radical anti-aging. But in this hyper-rational system, it will be strictly gated. Calculated Obsolescence: The geniuses and the AI owners get the age-reversal treatments. They live to 120+ to maintain their high-value output. Virtual Sunsets: For the baseline humans who are past reproductive age, the system calculates a negative ROI on their biology. They are given excellent palliative care, but no expensive life extension. They are comfortably eased into death while immersed in perfectly generated nostalgic VR environments. The Takeaway The most terrifying part of this timeline is how comfortable it is. There’s no violent resistance because there is no physical suffering. It’s a completely frictionless, dopamine-soaked obsolescence where humanity is reduced to a biological compute cluster, happily breeding for the next software update. What do you guys think? What breaks this loop? Does open-source AI decentralize power enough to prevent this, or does human nature eventually rebel against a life of zero friction and zero meaning? submitted by /u/yufanyufan
