I often see people on Swiss subreddits say that Switzerland has “no tipping culture”, that service is already included, and that people/tourists therefore shouldn’t tip. But growing up in Switzerland, my experience was/is quite different: most people around me would still leave something at restaurants, usually rounding up, or something around 5–10%. Not tipping would generally be because the service was bad, or because it was self-service/take-away. Not tipping otherwise would be considered “gauche”/a bit rude. To be clear, I’m not talking about American-style tipping culture where tips are expected and salaries depend on them, and I’m not trying to debate whether tipping should exist or not here. I want to know if, like me, you feel that there is a traditional Swiss habit of rounding up or leaving something extra that has existed for a long time . I also wonder whether there’s a difference between people who grew up in Switzerland and people who moved here later, and whether there’s a Röstigraben aspect to it. View Poll submitted by /u/ncmq
