I’ve been with Claude Code since February, and it started out great. Then Andrej Karpathy hit the news and I, like others, started adding his advice to my Claude instructions. “Visualize logic”, “95% Confidence”, etc. At the same time Opus 4.7 was announced…and things started to get weird. Forums were filling up with posts about how bad the current Claude models had gotten, speculation about Anthropic nerfing them to make way for Opus, etc. Then Mythos was announced, Opus 4.7 released, and the weirdness continued…. But lost in that rush was what Google A.I. calls the “Karpathy Heuristic”. I didn’t switch models (Sonnet 4.6) but my own personal experience was seriously degraded. My “lightbulb” moment came with I stopped Claude at 17 minutes of processing due to the comment, “Make sure to apply that transformation to the rotated text, but move it right not down.” When I asked Claude what was going on, the reply was, “I was rederiving the formula to see if I could exceed 95% confidence.” Since that moment I’ve been removing the “Karpathy Heuristics” from my instruction set and things have mostly returned to normal. Today I ran this command just to double check if anything currently in place would still result in “Vague Coding” with Claude: Please review all of the files you read when we code (~/.claude/** && ~/Developer/Claude-Code/**) and determine if ANY of the instructions are vague to your logic. Even after all of my research, care and pruning of my files this highlighted 15 issues, 2 of which Claude tagged as serious. submitted by /u/dar-mit
