There has been controversy over Jagex’s decision to make ship cannonballs use the same creation process as dwarvern cannonballs. People say it doesn’t make sense because of reasons like “they have drastically different damage numbers” and “it requires a quest that has nothing to do with the sailing skill”. They claim that this is a problem because having them be created through the same process, with the same bar efficiency, makes smelting cannonballs for sailing effectively pointless. Here’s the issue with arguments against the current implementation: Why would people want to smelt more cannonballs? If ship cannons were balanced around their ammo being primarily sourced from player smithing, that’s just adding more of an activity that nobody likes to the game. The entire reason why the Grimstone furnace was added was to reduce the time people spent on making cannonballs for the dwarvern cannon. Do people who oppose ship cannons using the same cannonballs as dwarvern cannons also think you shouldn’t be able to make dwarvern cannonballs at the Grimstone furnace? submitted by /u/DriveCtor
