I keep reading people saying “once AI can replace SWE, it will replace all white collar work”. But im not sure about that. I feel like SWE is in a unique position. Not full job replacement (at least for a while), but massive headcount reduction. It seems to me theres so much more human trust and institutional protection baked into fields like law/accounting/finance that make it more resistant. I could see AI making SWE teams of 10 go to teams of 3, while these other while collar fields really only have their boring work automated.
