I’m torn between renewing my CC subscription and signing up for Codex instead. 5.5 is not as good as Opus 4.8 or even 4.7 in understanding my codebase. However, the speed with which 5.5 fast responds more than makes up for it. I can iterate quicker and catch the model doing nonsense easier The stuff I’m working with is fairly complex and non standard. Models struggle to implement any feature correctly so my edits are usually frequent and mechanical - I don’t delegate any reasoning or decisions about architecture to the models. I’m finding this workflow is incompatible with Opus 4.7-4.8. high/xhigh take too long to respond (sometimes up to a full minute before I start getting tokens back) and the medium and below are too coarse and sometimes write very questionable code. I’ve already tried the generic advice to improve speed - defining tasks better, trying to limit scope, trying to put explicit caps on reasoning time etc. Sometimes it feels that the speed problems are baked into CC infrastructure, I get huge variability in response times which makes me believe that it is not the model that is slow but Anthropic side mechanisms e.g. peak time throttling, server load, individual parallel usage caps etc that make interacting with them slow. This is all on a Max plan mind you. With that being said - is there anything I can actually do to improve CC responsiveness? Or is Codex likely the better choice for me here? submitted by /u/endgamer42
