So Peter Steinberger, the guy behind OpenClaw, just joined OpenAI. If you don’t know what OpenClaw is - it’s that open-source AI agent that blew up to 180k GitHub stars in like two months. Basically an AI that can actually control your computer and do stuff for you. Sam Altman announced it this morning. OpenClaw’s staying open source which is cool, but now it’s got OpenAI backing it. Some context on why this matters: There was apparently a legit bidding war between Meta and OpenAI. Zuck was personally testing the thing and getting into arguments about the code. Steinberger ended up talking to both Sam Altman and Satya Nadella. Pretty wild for a solo dev who was running the whole operation at a loss six weeks ago. The name changes were a whole thing too. Started as Clawdbot, Anthropic’s lawyers weren’t happy about that. Then it was Moltbot. Then crypto people started harassing him so bad during the second rebrand that he almost just quit the whole project. Ended up doing the OpenClaw rebrand in total secret. Steinberger’s whole approach is interesting - dude committed like 6,600 times in January alone, mostly by just talking to AI agents and having them write the code. He runs like 4-10 agents at once. Said something about his hands being “too precious for writing now” lol. sources: TechCrunch coverage: https://techcrunch.com/2025/02/14/openai-hires-peter-steinberger-openclaw-founder/ submitted by /u/reddit20305
