Witchwood is a tree that is thought to be extinct. The only places where it is found are in Witchwood Icons sold by Slayer Masters and in the wooden parts that consist half of 50% Luke’s body on Braindeath Island. What does it do? Well, it seems to be able to function as a prosthetic, since 50% Luke is able to use the material and move his missing body half around. In addition, it protects the player against the blood curdling screams of the cave horrors. The cave horrors’ masks are made from black stone. Presumably the same black stone that consists the pillar on Mos Le Harmless and the totem found in Lassar Undercity during Desert Treasure 2. The Jungle Horrors outside the cave do not have masks and do not require a Witchwood Icon to defend against. But the horrors are very similar ape like creatures, likely the same species just in two different locations. So I would hazard to presume that the masks themselves are the source of the need for the icon. The Blackstone material is strongly linked to the Shadow Realm, as seen in Desert Treasure 2. So, if the Witchwood icon can defend the player against the effect of the blackstone, then it would stand to reason that in order to sail into the south-eastern ocean, to the Cursed Archipelago, you would need protection against the effects of the blackstone and the Shadow Realm for your ship. The Pirate story line is bound to receive continuation in the future of Sailing. In Runescape 3, the pirate quests are associated with the blackstone as well, perhaps it will in OSRS as well. Since the Witchwood has only been encountered through 50% Luke, it would stand to reason that perhaps a source for the material exists somewhere in the Eastern sea. TLDR; I think pirate quests will have us find magical wood to go explore tentacle water. submitted by /u/Valdurs
