I’m on the $20/month Claude Pro plan and for the last 2-3 days I’ve been running into a frustrating issue with Claude Code in VS Code. I keep getting: “API Error: Usage credits required for 1M context” What’s strange is that: • I’m starting completely fresh sessions • Sometimes it happens within minutes of starting a chat • I’m not intentionally selecting a 1M context model • This wasn’t happening before • It now seems to happen in almost every session I’ve already seen a few GitHub issues and Reddit comments from other users reporting similar behavior, which makes me wonder if there was a recent change to how Claude Code handles context windows or model selection. My setup: Claude Pro ($20/month) Claude Code in VS Code Windows Started happening only recently Questions: Is anyone else seeing this? Did Anthropic recently change how 1M context works? Is Claude Code automatically switching to a 1M context model? Has anyone found a reliable fix besides enabling usage credits?
