At the same time, these cantons often experience higher crime rates than many smaller or more conservative cantons. Despite this, a significant share of the population and political establishment remains relatively positive toward immigration and foreign residents. In contrast, some cantons with lower crime rates and fewer social problems often seem to have stronger anti-immigration sentiments, and public debates there sometimes place greater blame on foreigners for social issues. How do economists, sociologists, and political scientists explain this apparent contradiction? Is it because economically successful cantons benefit more from immigration and therefore tolerate its downsides? Or are differences in crime rates, demographics, urbanization, media coverage, and political culture more important factors?
