I bought x20 codex to try it out and measure it against claude code, its really not as good as i was convinced it would be. Test includes both top tier models, 5.5 Xhigh vs 4.8 max. In my SaaS along with my custom skills and subagents specifically made for that app, I did a code review with Opus, then submitted that to GPT to review the Opus’ review findings and vice versa. (Both models use the same skills and agents - sidenote, I was not happy with the codex harness, even after prompting AGENTS.md to explicitly always use subagents (with what model and reasoning effort to use for each task and part of my workflow), i always had to type in the start of each session to use agents (in the documentation they say you have to do this… not my preference) it regularly chose wrong. Opus does this effortlessly, it adheres more to the prompts i give it.) GPT said, that Opus’ review findings captured way more issues that the GPT review, and EVEN SAID that it would prefer to use the Opus’ review to apply those fixes to the codebase Opus said, that GPT’s review didn’t quite catch all the issues present. It did find other issues opus didn’t, although they were not as severe as Opus’ findings - opus found a critical security hole and many other optimalisations which gpt didn’t. I mostly got convinced by gpt meat humpers in their discord and reddits to buy it because they said how much better it is than claude code, but oh how they were wrong. The overall experience and work it gets done is better in claude code. For my use case opus clearly is the better choice. For you it might not be, i’m just saying how it had always worked for me, but in general Opus seems to clearly win. Ill stick to opus plans, gpt executes, opus reviews and fixes workflow for now, so i utilise the codex i spent my money on… What do you think about Codex?
