Try it here: lookalikes2026.com I built a World Cup 2026 footballer lookalike finder using FaRL face embeddings The idea: upload a selfie, get matched to your closest lookalike across all 1,248 players at the 2026 World Cup. How it works technically:
- Face detection using OpenCV Haar cascade
- FaRL ViT-B/16 embeddings (trained on 20M faces from LAION) for feature extraction
- Cosine similarity against a pre-computed 1,248 x 512 player embedding matrix
- Popularity-weighted scoring (0.75 x face similarity + 0.25 x player fame) so well-known players surface more naturally
- WHY YOU MATCH reasons generated by Claude Haiku via the Anthropic API
- Built on HuggingFace Spaces with Gradio, Cloudflare for routing The whole inference pipeline runs in about 2-3 seconds on a T4 GPU. Building the player database was the hardest part — 25,000+ photos scraped, cleaned and embedded across 48 nations. Happy to answer any questions about the architecture.
