My 2yo niece has always frozen in fear at the sight of me. She stops smiling, stares into my eyes and won’t look away. Like a rabbit that’s been noticed by a dog. It’s starting to make me look really bad in front of the family 😅. I feel like my SIL is starting to trust her daughter’s instincts… I should probably make a better effort to fix this. At first a could care less, as I have girls of my own around that age to give my attention to. I’m their favorite person in the world rn. Other kids seem to like me fine (and dogs lol). I’m not tall or fat. I’m clean cut. I don’t have facial hair. I don’t think I’m ugly… I usually just smile and say “Hi _____! Cool _____ you’ve got there” and try not to bother her anymore. I’m worried I have a creepy smile or something 🙃. Sometimes I just turn away when my niece makes eye contact now, so she doesn’t make a scene. A few times I’ve (or my 3yo has) tried inviting her to play with me and my daughters on the floor with blocks & toys. The niece is very unsure, and stares at me until I finally let them be. I think it amuses her parents… but I won’t get into that. I only see my niece weekly along with the whole family. Truthfully, I only care because it’s awkward.
