Maybe I’m missing something, but this has been bothering me for a while. I have subscriptions to tools like Claude Code and they are ridiculously cost-effective compared to using the same models through APIs. If I built the same workflows on API credits alone, I’d burn through money much faster. Because of that, I find myself building everything around the subscription instead of the API. In practice that means terminal sessions, agents, scripts and various workarounds to get things done through Claude Code rather than just calling an endpoint directly. It works, but it also feels backwards. I’m adding technical complexity just because the pricing model pushes me in that direction. Personally, I’d love a model where a subscription also gives access to an API with some reasonable fair-use limits. As a developer, that would make experimenting and building side projects much more accessible. Yet I don’t really see anyone moving in that direction. Is there a technical reason for this? Or is it simply that API pricing is too profitable and vendors don’t want to cannibalize that revenue?
