19M By “taking care of my appearance,” I mean things like outfits, hairstyling, and fragrances. The only things I consider non-negotiable are showering, using deodorant, brushing my teeth, and skincare. To me, those are tied to health and basic hygiene. I also don’t want to make other people uncomfortable by smelling bad. The thing is, I don’t get a confidence boost from looking good. In fact, I have a hard time perceiving people, including myself, as attractive or unattractive. I just genuinely feel nothing about my appearance or someone else’s. Because of that, it seems like the main and the only purpose of putting effort into my appearance would be to make a better impression on other people and potentially gain practical benefits, such as better career opportunities, higher income, or maybe dating success. My lifestyle is pretty simple. I work 9–5 (my job is not tied to looks at all), go home, and occasionally hang out with my friends. That’s about it. Given all that, is it worth investing time, money, and effort into things like fashion, hairstyling, fragrances and maybe something else I don’t know about…? submitted by /u/UpperDurian5100
