Im super annoyed around these discussions - and you may say: then dont read them and I do exactly that. But the entitlement of some of the people is really through the roof. The arguments and story lines reach ridiculous dramatic arches: basically Switzerlands downfall as a society because we don’t install ACs and we’re stupid. I think this heat wave needs to be taken seriously. I do truly empathize with everybody suffering in here, its rough. Do I think we should get ACs? Yeah. Do I think Swiss Society is falling apart because we dont have them (yet) - No. I think work spaces and generally where people gather in groups and don’t have a choice it should be cooled down by ACs. I worry about elderly homes, generally elderly people, kids in school, any office spaces that have many people, they should definitely have ACs in summer. As someone having lived 10 years of my life under the roof of hot urban houses - I know and feel the pain and wish for an AC. 30 degrees under the roof happened also 10 years ago. People have been warning about temperature increases and urbanization making this worse for YEARS. Sustainable ways of cooling have not been funded - we drive bigger cars, have paved more streets. And now because people suffer through the consequences of these long-term decisions they think throwing a tantrum about how the rest of the world uses ACs and we’re stupid for not doing so is gonna help. It’s not. I like living in a country where we think long-term about planning. Do I always agree with it? No. Often not. But fast-tracking your AC permit is also not going to happen in a country where the 7-8 other months are cool and we’ve only reached unbearable heat peaks the last 2-3 years or so. Change takes time. People comparing this to equatorial countries with less financial means and them having ACs: yeah but they are warm all year around or considerably more often. We have 3 hot summer months usually and they are not this hot throughout. We have lakes and rivers literally everywhere, we are very spoiled geographically and Im happy we used those means of cooling down instead of ACs. We’re only now reaching end of 30 degress regularly, which makes ACs come up. And before you say we have heatings: yeah but we have had minus degrees and 0 for a long long time and consistently, so we planned for it. The weather next week is largely going to be 8-9 degrees cooler - it’s still hot but thats the heat we can handle with blinds, fans, some planning, etc. Maybe for your understanding of why the ACs are not gonna appear out of nowhere suddenly because your roof temperature shows 30 degrees. But it used to be a couple of bad nights and then it would cool down again to more bearable summer temperatures. It seems that these stretches of heat are getting now longer and I do worry about it. I don’t think we’re gonna be able or should avoid ACs but I truly disagree with the statement we’re stupid and backwards for refusing to install it immediately. This needs a layered approach and ACs are part of the discussion. submitted by /u/airbubble194
