Hi, I am a foreigner living in Switzerland for 3 years now. This April I’ve been invited to the local volunteer firefighters’ ball (I have joined the firefighters last year) and it was themed as “Swiss traditional journey”. Almost everybody was wearing Edelweisshemd. I didn’t know that it’s so common that everybody has one. I really liked the looks of it and the overall meaning of tradition and swissness. So next time I went to Landi I’ve bought one to myself, but I haven’t wore it yet. This week we have a team building event at my workplace, it will be a hike to Stoos, campfire, grilling cervelat and all that, very Swiss. So I thought maybe I could wear my Edelweisshemd. But then I considered: I am not Swiss, don’t know the traditions, maybe it’s offensive, or overdoing for a foreigner to wear traditional Swiss clothing. I don’t want to look weird or get ridiculed. So what do you think? Is it OK? What would you say to yourself* if you see a foreigner in Edelweisshemd? “Oh no, what the f was he thinking? This is OUR tradition! Blasphemy!” or “Oh nice, this guy tries to integrate and what a gesture to wear traditional clothing.”? (* I know you’re a Swiss, so you would not say anything to me about it if it’s inappropriate 😁) submitted by /u/Particular-Bridge106
