Spoiler Free Section: Mod Ed suggested doing this quest blind. I took him up on that suggestion, and I am so glad I did. It was my first ever blind quest, apart from the initial sailing quests. This quest will teach you everything you need to know over time, and the gear requirements aren’t very steep. If you pay attention to your surroundings and the other characters involved in the story, you will learn the same things a guide would tell you. Please take Mod Ed’s advice. You won’t regret it! I had to make this post to gush about what is some of the best conveyance of information I’ve ever seen in a game. Spoiler Section: Each fight in this quest builds up your knowledge so incredibly well through visual and diegetic storytelling. Fight 1 With Lowerniel: You see Vanescula, who has closely watched Lowerniel for her entire vampire lifetime, dodging Lowerniel’s attacks like a pro and even changing prayers sometimes. When he turns towards you, it’s a confusing mess and you can’t stop taking damage. You click around a little and realize that the sparkles under your feet mean mean something important. When Lowerniel attacks Veliaf, he struggles too. He dodges once and then takes some damage and gobbles down some food. If you’re like me, this fight ends before you can really figure Lowerniel out. Fight 2 with Lowerniel: Efaritay has fought Lowerniel and studied him for many human lifetimes. Like Vanescula, she dodges Lowerniel and fights him to a standstill. There are only 3 people in this fight, so it is much less chaotic. This lets you watch Efaritay and understand things a bit better. Eventually it clicks that Lowerniel’s blood is the tell for where he will attack. You dodge multiple attacks in a row, and Efaritay rewards you with a heal and an attack to Lowerniel. Not much to say about revisiting ToB. It was very fun but unrelated to the other fights in this quest. Wyrd: This fight puts an interesting spin on mechanics you’ve already seen throughout the quest. If you hadn’t already figured out how to deal with the venator scream, you’ll learn here. The “concentration” hint in chat was just enough to make me turn my prayer off and try. You’ve also been conditioned to watch the boss for tells to avoid slam attacks. In this case, it’s pretty easy to learn that the punches are similar to Lowerniel’s blood. Fight 3 with Lowerniel: In this fight, the hype factor gets cranked up to 11. You have assembled so many powerful characters to try to take out Lowerniel, and he is fighting back more seriously, chaining together more attacks than ever before at you. He instantly kills all of the unimportant (and inexperienced) members of your team. Veliaf still struggles, and Efaritay still fights well. You are somewhere inbetween, but you’re getting better. Before you can finish him off, Saafalan takes Lowerniel into Vampyrium. You’re hit with the realization that you’re going to have to do this fight alone. The Final Fight with Lowerniel: Heading into Vampyrium alone feels like stepping into Dark Souls’ Lordran or Elden Ring’s The Lands Between. You are a puny human from a different world, and you have to take down a man you’ve seen kill an army in front of you. The fight itself plays out exactly like a Dark Souls duel. When you die, there’s no penalty other than hitting the box up for more supplies. It’s just you, your patience, and the one-winged angel vampire. You gradually build up your knowledge against him. When he starts using magic, you’re reminded of Vanescula and Efaritay’s prayer swaps. Jagex added a dodge animation to wave skipping to help newer players understand how it works. Lowerniel even uses blood pools and lightning bolts, reminding you of Vanstrom’s fight in the previous quest. Slowly but surely, you overcome Lowerniel even as he speeds his attacks up to a pace that quickens your heartbeat. When you finally beat him, it feels like all the knowledge and experience you’ve had over the course of this quest crystalizes. Bravo Jagex. submitted by /u/Xetta
