(spoilers) The Blood Moon Rises is Old School’s best quest, in my opinion - not just because of the incredible boss fight, but also because of the writing and characters. Most of the subreddit has been talking about Lowerniel, and rightfully so, but I think Vanescula is still my favorite character in the series. When she first approaches the Myreque and makes her offer, I think most of us were eventually expecting her to betray us. And she does, in a way, by turning Safalaan into a Wyrd. But there’s a certain ambiguity to her evil that makes her a much more complex and layered character than your typical villain. She firmly believes everything she did was necessary to create a better future for Morytania, and in many ways she was proven right. Safalaan’s transformation caused him to severely injure Drakan to the point where the player character was able to kill him - a horrible, despicable action, but one done not out of malice but out of a firm belief that it was necessary. In some ways it reminds me of the Fireflies’ decision to sacrifice Ellie to create a cure in The Last of Us . After you kill Lowerniel, you can talk to her in Castle Drakan post-quest, and I love how she stands by what she did and makes no apologies for her actions: Vanescula Drakan: You may not like what I did, but whether you accept it or not, Lowerniel was only defeated thanks to me. Vanescula Drakan: I was the one that turned Safalaan, giving him the strength to injure him. I was the one that gave you the information needed to make a weapon capable of killing him. Player: We’d have found another way. Vanescula Drakan: You’re free to keep telling yourself that, but deep down, I think you know the truth. The complexity of her character and motivations make her the quest series’ standout character, IMO, and easily the best-written vampyre in the game along with Sugadinti. submitted by /u/asmallthrowaway9
