Just curious what everyone in here thinks of Claude or Codex? I’ve personally used both — I used Claude Code back when it came out and was in preview on the CLI back March 2025 (before you could combine it with a subscription) and liked it enough but the API costs and output didn’t wow me enough to permanently switch from GH Copilot. I used GH Copilot up until June 2026. Then they switched up their payment model and made usage based on tokens rather than prompt count. This meant power users would reach their monthly quota in a day or two whereas before they were getting a steal. I retried Claude Code, using the VS Code extension and was not impressed at all. Part of the issue may have been I didn’t setup Claude.md and the copilot-instruction.md files weren’t automatically used as agent context, but it would have been nice if these were automatically detected. Anyways, the models seemed dumber than GH Copilot even though they were the same exact models. I found GPT-5.4 to be better than Sonnet 4.6 so I had switched to this during my last month of GH Copilot. Then I finally tried Codex (I had avoided it for months) after seeing a demo of it from a coworker. I was impressed right away. I hadn’t realized my $20 ChatGPT subscription had already included it. The usage was fairly generous and already better than the $40 GH Copilot subscription. It seemed to better understand my repo context from the start than Claude Code. I ended up getting the $100 Codex plan and getting rid of Windsurf and GH Copilot (I supplemented Windsurf with GH Copilot when i ran out of the monthly quota since SWE 1.6 was free and not terrible). I’ve loved it ever since (albeit its an adjustment not working directly out of an IDE — the files are obscured from view and to manually make adjustments, I still need to open VS Code separately). What is everyone elses thoughts on Codex vs Claude? I’ve seen a lot of mixed reactions to Claude since Fable came back and the new Sonnet model was released (more bad than good it seems). I personally haven’t tested Fable, GPT-5.5 has been able to do enough for me. submitted by /u/NashCodes
