We have so many posts about niche items, or what is dumb, but i haven’t seen anything brainstorming where the upgrade ideas could exist or come from. i.e. Nobody is brainstorming a new BIS Mage weapon because shadow exists, but the Rodanche solves a chip-damage issue that everyone can appreciate. So where should we be looking for upgrades? Types of Rewards: Wearable or Usable. All previous raid rewards fit in 2 categories, wearblae (gear) and usable (prayers, Vials of blood, Thread of elidnis). We already have 2 usable rewards that are popular with Zeal (new melee pray) and the elemental spell upgrade. That leaves wearable. Head Slot: Torva/Ancestral/Masori are the meta, with Slay helm, Oathplate, Virtus, Serp, Void, faceguard and arma filling in the 2nd tier. Its a crowded space, but if there was a place to add an item i think a serp-like utility helm for range and mage could be interesting. Cape slot: Obviously this has become the PvM challenge slot, and a similar Mage Cape style Inferno/Colosseum encounter is something i expect in the next few years. not much movement here. Neck Slot: Rancour and Rupture are both fairly new and sit in a good place, but Occult is fairly dated and the timing with shadow rework could be perfect. Jagex has also tried to fit utility necklaces in here and there like salve and dragonbane but they have been very niche. There might be space for another utility (or maybe skilling?) amulet that actually gets use. Maybe a brimstone ring-esque hybrid necklace? I think there is room to do something with the neck slot. Ammo slot: I think this is the most unused slot in the game. its either ranged or a blessing or a gommals penny for the 1%ers. there is so much room to have some fun with lightbearer style utility mechanics in this slot. Main hand: we already have 2 main hand weapons (xbows and breaker) that i think are great ideas and will pass polls here, that matches the number for ToB and ToA, so i think we are Ok here. CoX did have 5 main hand weapons though, so the mage spec scepter fits in this space, although i dont think they nailed the details first try, its just an ayak with a different spec IMO. Chest: If we are talking chests, we are talking full armor sets, so Legs can be included here. Hybrid was a swing and miss, but i do think it was close. Ancestral is the oldest BIS armor and mage has a clear weakness in the armor pool: it is terrible defensively. Masori, Torva and Oathplate make ancestral look like paper. Rebranding the hybrid armor as tanky mage armor could be a move here, keep the dmg % the same as ancestral and drop a smidge of accuracy for the defensive bonuses - or make it drop with virtus offensive stats and big defensive stats but can be buffed offensively by meshing with ancestral. Regardless of the specifics, tanky mage gear is missing from OSRS, and this would be a good place to add it. Off-Hand: The Rodanche is IMO brilliant. Avernic defender is obviously better offensively and the speed runners and meta players will use the best offensive items, but many of us dont want to deal with chip damage, and the rodanche is close enough offensively to allow for a different, chip damage-free (or limited) lifestyle. So why stop at Melee? Give us a range and mage version! you could even make it 4 items that drop, with the base chip damage reducing shield and no offensive bonuses, then 3 different offensive bonus multipliers on top, the same way they proposed meshing it with the avernic defender. just add mage and range variations! Gloves: Gloves feel like they are in a good spot right now, and barrows gloves provide a downgrade to tribrid with. No ideas for this slot Feet: Avernic treads are amazing but they might make this slot a bit stuck in concrete for years to come. nowhere to go with this. Ring: I love the lightbearer, not just for use, but the idea of having to figure out when to trade utility for stats. We could always use more rings that do cool things, just like with ammo slots. Im not clever enough to do anything with this, but the potential is there. This is obviously not a complete list, and nothing is hyper specific, but i think its better to find solutions by working from a full picture and then distilling it down rather than analyzing specific individual ideas one-by-one. If you have any thoughts about which worn slots have room to be added to or niches that could be filled, id love to hear more. submitted by /u/Turd_Fergusons_Hat_
