Software should be becoming more efficient, less power-hungry, generate less heat. I’m not talking about cloud services or web applications. I want tools that run on old laptops, desktops, to become faster, and more efficient. I want the new software to run on old hardware so that each poor kid also gets the same convenience as others get. By “affordable,” I don’t just mean the subscription price. I mean the electricity required to compile a program should decrease. The power needed to serve a single user from a lightweight database, on a single laptop, should decrease. Software efficiency should reduce the total cost of computing. If humanity has generated a decade’s worth of slopware in the last three years, why don’t we have more efficient software? Instead, NON AI software with AI patches have become slower, more memory-hungry, and more power-hungry, while companies producing bloated, low-quality software continue to become unicorns. submitted by /u/Impossible_Site7605
