There is a clear and meaningful difference between these two terms, the main being that someone who refers to themselves as an expatriate has the intention of returning home, while an immigrant hopes/plans to permanently reside in the country. Both are “migrants” by definition, but there is a distinct difference. I also think the distinction is important. An immigrant hopes to remain permanently, meaning they plan to become a citizen, be a permanent part of the community, vote, etc. and essentially become a part of that country. This clearly comes with different expectations versus someone who plans to leave. Sure, the time they stay can vary greatly, but that doesn’t mean the two terms aren’t different. Why are people so strange around this topic? It seems somewhat Orwellian. submitted by /u/frustrated_burner
