We all know the famous case of Moutier who switched from canton Bern to canton Jura. This has made me wonder if such a thing would ever be possible at a municipal level, say if a village decides they wish to separate from their current municipality to either form their own or join another. How would this work? Do municipalities have to have specific processes laid out? Are they unique? Is there a federally dictated way to manage this kind of request. My thinking is that this would be very complicated because unlike with municipalities the boundaries of smaller villages and hamlets are much more nebulous.
