I had a horrible session with both Opus and Fable this week. They kept breaking basic repo rules, misunderstanding direct commands, writing the most garbage code ever. So I asked them about it and Opus pointed me to several contradictions in the memories, in the documentation and in my prompts. There were several “anxiety-inducing” terms in the memories especially. Then, I remembered how Fable can be mean to sub-agents, well, turns out Fable is also mean to memories. Also, Opus was being super verbose in the memories it wrote and the whole thing was a mess. How I made it better:
- Manually deleted 2/3 of what was in the project’s memories.
- Opened a new workspace and pointed it to another project’s memory and told it to remove story-telling, to change them to a more neutral language to avoid “stressing” the models (I cannot not laugh at this, honestly), also told it to write in plain, direct English.
- Also did a pass on the design and tasks documents and turned CLAUDE.md into an evergreen file pointing to basic rules and files. The result is that Opus is still a bit stupid but does the work like it used to do (can’t change a stupid model), and Fable is back to being awesome. tl;dr - maybe you should lobotomise your agents every once in a while.
