Hi everyone, I’m curious about what’s generally considered the right way to approach salary discussions, as I’m quite inexperienced with this. I’ve been working for the same company in IT for 7 years. I got an HF Wirtschaft diploma, a Bachelor’s, a DAS, and a few other certifications (mostly Microsoft plus some unrelated ones like Cantonal Accounting). Overall I feel like I’ve invested quite a bit both in time and money to improve my profile. The thing is, I have the feeling I’m still being paid pretty much an entry-level salary. The last raise I got was presented almost as if they were doing me a huge favor, but honestly I don’t feel my experience or qualifications are really being taken into account. From what I can find online, even after that raise I’m still around entry-level pay. I am in the forsaken lands (salary wise) of Ticino, so I know salaries are generally lower. And, of course, because people don’t really talk about salaries it’s hard to know if I’m completely off or not. What I’m unsure about is the approach. Would you first sit down with your manager and have an honest conversation about it? Or would you start applying elsewhere, get another offer, and only then have the discussion? I actually like the company and don’t really want to leave. But after 7 years it’s getting a bit frustrating feeling like experience doesn’t really count. I’m not a manager, but I do have various responsibilities and I’ve developed a lot of softwares for the company over the years. May I ask how would you handle it? I don’t want to be too confrontational submitted by /u/Oyddjayvagr
