Hi! I’m a student in computer science and I’m doing research on the use of artificial intelligence as a form of emotional support or therapy. I’d like to hear people’s thoughts on whether AI could help address the global shortage of accessible mental healthcare. Example1 Jason is struggling with problems at home, but he has no one to talk to, and professional mental healthcare is beyond his budget. He decides to try a free AI assistant that can hold conversations. He talks to it about his problems, and after their conversations he feels calmer and believes it helps him cope. He begins using it regularly as someone to talk to. Q: Is this good AI usage? Why or why not? Example2 Janice tells her husband about an argument at work that has been bothering her. During the conversation, she feels that he isn’t giving her the level of attention or support she was hoping for. Afterward, she opens an AI assistant on her phone and talks about the situation. She finishes the conversation feeling satisfied. Q: Is this good AI usage? Why or why not? Example3 Michael has been feeling anxious for several weeks. He talks to an AI assistant about how he’s been feeling. After reading his messages, the AI suggests that he should consider speaking with a licensed mental health professional and provides information on how to find one. Michael follows the suggestion and books an appointment. Q: Is this good AI usage? Why or why not? Everyone is welcome to answer. Thank you! submitted by /u/theupbeatone
