I hear this a lot - WoW has multiple characters under 1 subscription, why can’t OSRS have this. This comes mostly from people who don’t play WoW, so they saw somebody else say it, and now are repeating it back without putting much thought into this. The reason WoW has multiple characters under 1 subscription is because every character can only do very specific things. Imagine if your Runescape character can only train ranged, and you had to make a second character to train magic, and a third character to train melee. In OSRS everything is already unlocked, you don’t have to make a new character to play specific roles, you can be whoever you want to be, so having 1 character makes much more sense. Secondly, big MMOs rely heavily on MTX, which Runescape doesn’t have anymore. You can visit WoW battle shop and see the insane amounts of predatory systems they have in place like account boosts, name transfers, race changes, faction changes, all cost real life money. Imagine if OSRS had a $60 booster pack where you can start with 70 attack, defence and strength once you leave tutorial island, because that’s what a lot of other MMOs are selling, and tons of people buy it. That’s how they can keep their monthly sub lower because majority of their income comes from shit like selling you POH items for $25, or in Runescape terms selling Leagues cosmetics for $15 a piece, but we get it for free by just playing the game. Even things like character names, the only way to change it is by giving Blizzard $10, there’s no other option. I’m not even gonna get into the fact that every few years you have to pay $50-90 just to access new content. Imagine if Raids 4 were only accessible after you paid $50 to Jagex, because once again that is the kind of shit other MMO companies do. If all of them didn’t heavily rely on MTX, their subscription would also be way higher than it is right now. I think a lot of Runescape players don’t know how good they currently have, there really isn’t a better MMO out there in terms of how much content we get compared to the price we pay. submitted by /u/Large_Armadillo1
