Got a CHF 100 fine for buying the wrong ticket( 10 cents difference) by mistake. To make a long story short, I was taking the metro in Lausanne. While walking to the platform, I accidentally bought the wrong ticket: a CHF 2.30 ticket instead of the CHF 2.40 (demi tarif) ticket. When I was checked, the inspector told me that I had probably bought the wrong ticket. I immediately apologized and explained that it was an honest mistake. She then asked whether I wanted to pay the fine on the spot. I asked how much it was, and she told me it was CHF 100. That’s 1,000 times the 10-cent difference between the two tickets. I pointed this out and explained that I understood my mistake, but that the penalty seemed extremely disproportionate. She told me that I could contest the fine, but because I did not pay immediately, I was charged an additional CHF 25. I understand that rules are rules, and I accept that I made an error. However, I’ve lived here for four years and have never received a fine or had any problems with public transport before.
