Now that the poll is over, we know what Raid 4’s mega rare is going to look like. Regardless of where you landed on the different reward proposals, I think the whole process has shown one thing pretty clearly: there was never going to be an option that pleased everybody. The community voted, the weapon passed, and I’m genuinely excited to see what Jagex does with it. I’m not trying to reopen that debate or suggest there’s some name everyone is magically going to agree on either. This is completely my own opinion. But there’s one part of the reward that I still think could use another look: the name. Maybe it’s just me, but “Obligator” has always sounded a little goofy. I’ve heard the same reaction from quite a few people I’ve spoken to about the rewards. It’s not that it’s an objectively terrible name. It just doesn’t really feel like the name of a raid mega rare to me. Especially when you put it beside the others: Twisted Bow Scythe of Vitur Tumeken’s Shadow Obligator These weapons eventually become part of the vocabulary of the game. We barely even think about their names anymore. Tbow, Scythe and Shadow just are OSRS. Raid 4’s mega rare is probably going to join that group and be talked about for years, so I think it’s worth getting the name right while we’re still looking at concept art. Looking at the design that passed, the part that immediately stands out is that enormous spiked weight at the end of the chain. It’s not quite a conventional mace, and calling it a flail doesn’t really capture how distinctive it looks either. The shape of the head kept making me think of a star. That eventually got me to: Arbiter’s Star “Star” describes the weapon visually without trying to force it into a weapon category it doesn’t quite fit, while “Arbiter” feels appropriate for the Guthixian themes of balance and maintaining order between opposing forces. More than anything, though, I just think it sounds like it belongs in OSRS. Twisted Bow. Scythe of Vitur. Tumeken’s Shadow. Arbiter’s Star. And eventually: Tbow. Scythe. Shadow. Star. There are other directions you could take the same idea. Arbiter’s Meteor could work for a huge chained weight being swung into something. Arbiter’s Morningstar is more recognizable as a weapon name, although the historical definition isn’t a perfect match for the design. I’m not pretending Arbiter’s Star is going to please everyone either. It just clicked for me when I looked at the artwork, and I think it has a little more staying power than Obligator. The weapon passed. Let it stay. This isn’t about restarting the mega rare debate, but the name doesn’t necessarily have to be locked in with it. If this thing is going to stand alongside Tbow, Scythe and Shadow for the next decade, I think we can come up with something a little more memorable than Obligator.
