I’m not looking for advice about whether I should continue a particular relationship. I’m interested in hearing from men who have actually become stepfathers or built a long-term relationship with someone who already had children. I’m in my 20s and recently met a woman with two children, which made me start thinking seriously about what this kind of family structure actually means. I’ve been reading experiences from stepparents, and I’ve noticed a huge difference in perspectives. Some men say they developed a great relationship with their stepchildren and wouldn’t change anything. Others say they love their partner but still feel that they gave up a version of family life they originally wanted. For those of you who have actually lived through this: What did you misunderstand about being a stepfather before you experienced it? What changed about your expectations of family, marriage, finances, freedom, or having your own children? What turned out to be much easier than you expected, and what turned out to be much harder? I’m particularly interested in hearing from men who entered the situation relatively young and without children of their own. submitted by /u/No-Wealth4163
