I’ve seen a barrage of posts about Opus 5 being worse in several ways than 4.8 with many people saying they’ve switched back to 4.8 [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 ] I’d love to get a sense of how many people here continue to use Opus 5 vs have reverted to 4.8. The issues I’ve heard about: Looping : Get’s stuck in long thinking loops not doing work Confusing Responses: Invented jargon that is unintelligible and have to request plain english explanations Instruction Following: Doesn’t seem to follow instructions. Thinks it knows better and goes off and does it’s own thing Dumber: Generally people feel it’s less intelligent. Now I also know Anthropic has come out saying that Opus 5 needs new prompting strategies and cleaning up of Claude.md files etc: Prompting Opus 5 and that benchmarks show clear wins . Also seemingly High and Xhigh cause too much overthinking and Medium may be the sweet spot ? So my questions are: How many people are using Opus 5 vs 4.8? Is this user error with using bloated skills and CLAUDE.md or thinking level higher than needed? What do we think happened with 5? I’ve never seen so many people agreeing that a model is bad. Codex 5.6 was received with a lot of praise. I’m personally trying to give Opus 5 a chance but it does feel a lot dumber, not understanding things that Opus 4.8 would. submitted by /u/djacksondev
