I think there are plenty of “good things” we do, and plenty of bad things we avoid doing, but not necessarily (or not entirely) out of virtue. I’m curious to know if you have any examples. For example, I’ve never, and probably never will, use prostitution services. I find sexual exploitation, especially of people who are victims of human trafficking, deeply disgusting. But if I’m being honest, there’s also a big part of me whose ego is simply too big to stoop to paying for sex. I’d feel like a complete fool. It’s almost as if my pride itself acts as a barrier more than moral consciousness Same thing with harassment, especially guys who get rejected but keep insisting, texting, being pushy, etc. Obviously, I find it unhealthy and disrespectful not to accept someone’s rejection. But I think there’s also a much less noble reason why I could never be that guy: too much pride. One last example: the few times I’ve stepped in in public to defend young women from creepy/aggressive guys. Obviously, it was the right thing to do, but if I’m being completely honest, there may also have been a tiny part of me acting out of narcissism: the fantasy of seeing myself as the guy who comes to save the damsel in distress. Ultimately, I think very few actions are completely selfless. Even when the selfish or narcissistic motivation is tiny, it can still be there. Anyway, I’m not really trying to make some deep philosophical point here. I’m just curious whether you have other examples, and they don’t necessarily have to involve ego as the reason. submitted by /u/Saharabomb
