Recently, one of our friends in our friend group has had some unfortunate life events. We’ve watched him turn inward and hibernate, and he has been turning down all our invites to dinners, bonfires, etc. He’s always been sort of a recluse, but not to this extent. Now, we just found out that he canceled an international trip he was really looking forward to with his other friends. After finding this out, I’ve gotten more concerned about him because even in the past, when his mental health was low, he would have never done something like this. We feel like this is a sign that this depressive phase doesn’t seem to be like his previous ones, and we need to handle this differently. Since he’s been turning down all our offers to get him out of the house, we decided we would go to him (he lives with two of our friends), try to get him to come out of his room, cook his favorite dinner, and try to get him to play a board game or something afterward. We don’t want to do too much and overwhelm him (he’d be more likely to continue hiding), so we’re trying to keep it low-key and personal.
