Back when Anthropic introduced weekly limits for Claude, one of the reasons they gave was that some power users were running Claude Code 24/7, saying that someone on the $200 Max plan had burned through tens of thousands of dollars worth of model usage in a single month. Then we eventually got to Opus 4.6. To be fair, Opus 4.6 really was an absurdly good model, but after it launched everyone started complaining about how ridiculously fast it burned through usage, and Anthropic later acknowledged that Claude Code had defaulted Opus 4.6 to high effort, which caused disproportionate token consumption in some cases. And the current model lineup is even funnier. Everything except Haiku is already on version 5: Sonnet, Opus, and Fable/Mythos, while the lightest model, Haiku, feels like it has basically been abandoned. When Haiku 4.5 launched, Opus was still on 4.1. Since then, Opus has gone through 4.1 → 4.5 → 4.6 → 4.7 → 4.8 → 5, while Haiku is still sitting there at 4.5. Back then, with Max 5x, at least for me, I could spend my weekly included usage directly on what was then Anthropic’s best model, Opus. Now that Fable is here, there’s yet another layer. Max technically includes Fable, but Fable can only consume up to 50% of your weekly included usage. Hit that 50%? Either go back to Opus/Sonnet or start buying Usage Credits and pay as you go. Pro is even more ridiculous: Fable doesn’t count toward the subscription allowance at all, so you’re basically being pushed straight into usage-based billing. And the funniest part is that Fable 5 itself costs $10/M input tokens and $50/M output tokens via the API, exactly twice the price of Opus 5. So I’m genuinely curious: once everyone gets used to Fable, is Anthropic going to suddenly say, “Fable usage has significantly exceeded our expectations…” and then boom — drop Claude Epic 6 or Claude Saga 6, 30% better performance, another price tier higher, and Max subscribers only get 25% of their weekly allowance on it? Then Fable magically becomes the “value model,” Sonnet slowly turns into the roadside budget option, and as for Haiku?
